Rip SACD to DSD

Super Audio CD (SACD) delivers audio in DSD (Direct Stream Digital) — a format prized by audiophiles for its natural, analog-like sound. But SACD DSD layer can’t be played on standard CD players or ripped with typical CD ripping software.

Lossless Extract gives you two ways to extract DSD audio from your SACD collection, depending on your setup.

What Is DSD and Why Does It Matter?

DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is fundamentally different from PCM audio (used in CDs, FLAC, and WAV). Instead of multi-bit samples at fixed intervals, DSD uses a 1-bit stream at extremely high sample rates:

  • DSD64 — 2.8224 MHz (64× CD sample rate)
  • DSD128 — 5.6448 MHz (downloadable files)
  • DSD256 — 11.2896 MHz (downloadable files)

This approach captures audio with exceptional resolution and a smooth, analog character that many listeners prefer for acoustic music, jazz, and classical recordings.

Two Ways to Extract SACD Audio

Method 1: SACD ISO File

If you already have SACD images in ISO format:

  1. Drag the ISO file onto Lossless Extract (or use File → Open)
  2. The app reads the SACD structure and displays all tracks
  3. Select DSF, DFF or FLAC output
  4. Extract individual tracks or the entire disc in gapless mode

Method 2: Network Extraction (Unique Feature)

This is where Lossless Extract stands apart. If you own a compatible SACD player (such as certain Sony or Oppo models), you can extract SACDs directly over your local network:

  1. Insert the SACD into your compatible player
  2. In Lossless Extract, go to the Network SACD panel
  3. Enter your player’s IP address and test the connection
  4. Click Extract — the disc is read over the network and saved as an ISO file

Why this matters: Many audiophiles already own compatible bluray players. Network extraction lets you digitize your collection using hardware you may already have, without ever needing to connect a special disc drive to your computer.

DSF vs DFF: Which Output Format?

Feature DSF DFF
Metadata/tagging ✅ Supports ID3 tags ❌ No tagging support
Compatibility Widely supported Less common
File size Slightly larger (metadata header) Slightly smaller
Best for Music libraries, streaming to DAC Archival

Recommendation: Use DSF for most cases. It supports embedded metadata and album artwork, so your files integrate cleanly into music servers like Kodi, Roon, Audirvana, or foobar2000.

Tagging Your DSD Files

After extraction, use Lossless Extract’s built-in tagging panel to add metadata:

  • Audio fingerprinting — one click to identify the album and auto-apply artist, title, track names, and artwork
  • Manual tagging — search and apply metadata from the tagging panel

Streaming DSD to Your DAC

Once extracted, you can stream DSD natively to compatible DACs using:

  • Roon — full DSD support, streams DSD over network (DoP or native)
  • Audirvana — native DSD playback on macOS and Windows
  • foobar2000 — with SACD plugin and ASIO output
  • Kodi — playback of individual dsf files or SACD iso after installing the SACD plugin

No more swapping discs — your entire SACD collection is available for instant playback at original DSD quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert DSD to FLAC?
Yes, but this involves converting from 1-bit DSD to multi-bit PCM, which is not lossless. For purists, keeping the original DSD format is recommended. Lossless Extract focuses on preserving the original format, but flac extraction with replay gain is available at 88.2 and 176.4 24bit

Do I need a special drive for physical SACDs?
You need a compatible Blu-ray drive that can read the SACD layer. Not all drives support this. Network extraction is an alternative if your drive doesn’t support SACD.

Is network extraction as good as disc extraction?
Yes — the data is identical. Network extraction reads the same DSD stream from the disc; it just transfers it over your local network instead of through a USB/SATA connection.

What about hybrid SACDs?
Hybrid SACDs contain both an SACD layer (DSD) and a standard CD layer (PCM). Lossless Extract can extract the CD layer and also the high-resolution SACD layer, giving you the DSD audio.
